John Henning miniature Charioteers Parthenon Frieze.
The Parthenon was built as a temple dedicated to Athena, the patron goddess of Athens, between 447 and 438BC.
A frieze almost 160 ,metres in length and 1 metre high, ran around the upper part of the colonnade. The scenes depicted are thought to represent the great festival which took place every four years in which the goddess Athena was presented with a new peplos( sacred robe) on her birthday, This reduced size cast was produced using moulds made by scottish sculptor John Henning (1771-1851), Henning produced a series or reductions of scenes from the frieze making someadditions and restorations of his own.
