This STUNNING Limoges portrait plate with pierced handles is by far one of the most ornate and breathtaking pieces of porcelain I have been privileged to offer on the secondary market! This 19th Century piece was hand-painted after the famous oil painting, "The Betrothed," created in 1892 by the renowned artist, John William Godward (1861-1922). The execution of the composition is undeniably awe-inspiring and showcases the artist's profound talent with a brush. The special attention given to color, shading, and movement is undeniable.
The image depicts a lovely woman lounging on a leopard skin blanket with a magenta, silk pillow under her head. She is portrayed in a classical Greco-Roman background and surrounded by white marble.The beauty dons a gossamer gown with a blue sash and is toying with an engagement ring on her finger. She was recently betrothed to her beloved! Her face is replete with apprehensive joy, while her striking eyes are full of hope for the future. The artist was able to capture this moment of joy and contemplation with realism and accuracy. This center composition is also surrounded by a blush pink ground. The plate is decorated with hand-painted purple pansies and pink hearts around the edge. This Limoges France treasure is certainly a unique piece!
