Last Surviving NH Shaker Sister Ethel Hudson Signs Postcard -- Photos Of Others:
$350.00

Canterbury Shaker Village, established in 1792, remained in Canterbury, NH, for 200 years. It has operated as a museum since 1992, when the last Shaker sister in residence, ETHEL HUDSON, died. At its height in the 1850s, 300 people lived and worked in more than 100 buildings on 3,000 acres in the village.

The Shakers’ revolutionary Christianity shocked their contemporaries. They challenged almost every mainstream ideal of American society. They believed in communal ownership, pacifism, dancing in worship, sexual equality, celibacy and living simply.

ELDRESS HUDSO lived at the Village for 85 years. She was the last living Shaker in New Hampshire.

4 x 6 postcard photograph of the group of Shakers in the 1950s at the village signed “Sister Ethel Hudson 93 yrs. Old” on the verso, three years before her passing. An original newspaper clipping of Hudson’s obituary is included.

Excellent condition.
