Hotel Harzburger Hof former German luxury hotel in Bad Harzburg

The Harzburger Hof was a luxury hotel in Bad Harzburg that opened in 1874. After bankruptcy in 2003, the 19th-century building was demolished after several fires in the summer of 2017. The new Harzburger Hof was to be opened as a Grand Hotel in 2022 by the investor Dieter Köhler.

As early as 1831, Neustadt, as Bad Harzburg was called until 1892, was also known as a bathing resort due to its brine springs. After the brine extraction stopped in 1851, the town concentrated entirely on spa tourism, which developed rapidly after the founding of the empire.

In 1872, the Braunschweigische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft founded a joint-stock company to operate a hotel in Bad Harzburg. The purpose of its statute was: "Uplifting the bathing and health resort of Harzburg by improving, increasing its remedies and health resorts". The house was opened in 1874 under the name Harzburger Hof and was visited by 1500 guests in the same year. The construction costs were 1.5 million marks. With 200 rooms, it was by far the largest hotel in Bad Harzburg and ranked fourth in Germany.

In 1903/04, an extension was added to accommodate around 270 rooms. The hotel also had a casino, dining facilities and elegant lounges. The complex also included Villa Diana, a spa and coffee house, as well as sales and drinking halls. The associated park had an area of 18,000 square meters.

In 1939 the Wehrmacht confiscated the buildings. After the war they were taken over by the British occupying forces and used as a convalescent home. On May 1st, 1956 it was reopened as a hotel. In 1975 the hotel was leased to Bruno Bischoff Beteiligungen und Investitions GmbH & Co. The casino was reopened and a wellness area with a swimming pool, sauna, solarium and fitness center was added.

In 1982 the company was converted into a GmbH. Due to a lack of investment, prominent guests stayed away. The hotel served more and more to accommodate hiking tourists. In 1989 the hotel went bankrupt. In the 1990s, the hotel was closed and the hotel was used as a retirement home instead, only the casino remained, but moved to another location in April 2000 due to increasing structural defects , and the retirement home was also closed around the turn of the millennium. Since then, the building has stood empty, becoming the target of Lost Place "tourists".

In 2003, the property, which had a land charge of around 5 million euros, was foreclosed on. It was not until 2010, however, that an investor from northern Germany was found who bought the property, which was once valued at 7.6 million euros, for 400,000 euros and left it empty. The long vacancy led to vandalism and arson in September 2013 and May 2014. The Braunschweig architect Thomas Funke took over the ruins in 2015 and promised to have a four-star to five-star hotel built there again. After another fire on July 17, 2016, the building was in danger of collapsing, but the owner refused to have the ruins demolished. Due to a settlement reached before the administrative court in Braunschweig, he finally had to start demolishing the building by August 1, 2017. The work dragged on for several months.

New Building

Due to delays in the planning process, the laying of the foundation stone was postponed to March 2019. The investor Dieter Köhler planned a new building with a total of 230 rooms, of which around 70 are intended as rooms for longer stays. The tradition of the old Harzburger Hof should be preserved. The shell construction should start in winter 2019.

The building application was submitted by Primus Harzburger Hof GmbH on December 17, 2018. The new hotel should open in late 2022 or early 2023.

In the meantime, the landowner changed in 2022, who secured the building site with a new site fence. However, the start of construction of the new Hotel Harzburger Hof is still open.
