Historic Santa Ana Indian Art Pottery Bowl Eiffel Tower Design Upper Rio Grande:
$145.49

Being offered is a historic, antique, Santa Ana Pueblo Indian art pottery bowl. The bowl has an Eiffel Tower design characteristic of this type of pottery. The pottery is classified as Santa Ana Polychrome and is attributed to the Upper Rio Grande Valley Culture. The bowl does show the characteristic age and wear associated with a piece this old. I would estimate this piece dates to around the turn of the century. The bowl has one very tight hairline but other than this is intact structurally. There is much wearing to the glaze design as shown in the pics. The bowl is approx. 4 3/8" wide by 1 5/8" tall.
According to the Southwest Typology Project associated with the State of New Mexico, "Santa Ana Polychrome was described and illustratedby Chapman (1938). For pottery produced in the first half of the eighteenthcentury, it is not possible to differentiate pottery made at Zia from SantaPueblo (Harlow and others 2005). In the 1700s, the historic pueblo of Santa Ana(Tamaya) moved from a location along the Jemez River near Zia to farming landsalong the Rio Grande (Batkin 1987). Earlierforms of Santa Ana Polychrome, as described here, are commonly assigned to aGroup A style indicative of production from 1830 to 1930 (Harlow and Others2005). This was widely traded type, and commonly occurs in the nineteenthcentury Hispanic types in the Albuquerque area. This style consists of wide andbold bands that cover large portions of the globular base. The characteristicdesign, sometimes referred to as, but not influenced by, the “Eiffel Tower”,(Harlow 1973; Harlow and others 2005) consists of bold two-sided step triangleswith open areas near the center of the wide portion."
