This specimen features Saint Benedict holding up the mighty Cross in his right hand with the inscription - CRUX. S. P. BENE. - meaning Cross of the Holy Father Benedict. Beside him on the right sits a Raven. Legend is that the Raven took a loaf of poisoned bread away from Benedict that an enemy had sent him thus protecting him from harm. On his left is the oval containing the Vade Retro Satana, meaning - Be Gone Satan -, It is the Medieval Western Christian Formula for Exorcism. Saint Benedict is the Patron Saint of Exorcisms and said to Provide Protection against evil influences. He is also the Patron Saint for Europe, Students and Monks.
