Bonded Revolutionary War Veteran Once Part Of Washington\'s Flying Camp 1st PA:
$245.00

Very interesting 1826 document bonding GEORGE WIDDER and JOSEPH ROOP, both of Frederick County, MD, as servants to JOHN HARPER of Liberty Township, Adams County, PA, for $200. If $100 is paid by or before December 20, 1830, the above obligation will be paid in full.

HARPER (1757-1839) was a Revolutionary War veteran, listed with the rank of Major in 1778 and serving in the Flying Camp 1st PA Militia.

After the British evacuation of Boston in March 1776, Gen. George Washington met with members of the Continental Congress to determine military strategy. Faced with defending a huge amount of territory from potential British operations, Washington recommended forming a “flying camp,” which referred to a mobile, strategic reserve of troops. Congress agreed and passed a resolution that a flying camp be immediately established in the middle colonies and consist of 10,000 men. Harper was part of the six thousand from Pennsylvania.

ROOP was born in Frederick County, MD, in 1796 and died in 1865 in Montgomery County, OH.
