For sale is a wonderful Antique Sioux (Lakota) Beaded Knife Sheath with Knife, obviously collected
on the Pine Ridge Reservation (SD), from circa 1880-1890s.
The sheath is made of folded rawhide with a native tanned hide cover, sewn with sinew and with a hide carrying
strap and three tin cones on the bottom.
The hide front of this small sheath is beaded in a simple traditional Lakota design of boxes, executed in white,
dark blue and greasy yellow beads. At the rawhide back of the sheath is written (much faded): \"Knife scabbard
(made ?) by Pine Ridge Sioux Indians\". Size of the sheath without cones is circa 6.5\" x 2.5\".
The small old trade knife that belongs to the sheath seems to be made into a \'sewing\' knife and is heavily used.
The knife is also circa 6.5\" long.
Provenance: This knife and sheath were from the collection of the US Children\'s Museum on the 19th Century.
They are still in the museum\'s files and can be viewed on their website as \'Brule Lakota, circa 1880\'.
