This map shows the Allied and Axis positions at El Alamein in North Africa on the afternoon of 16 July 1942. By this stage in the Desert War the British Eighth Army — which included a large proportion of troops from the Commonwealth — under Claude Auchinleck had twice fallen back through Cyrenaica. However, the attack on the Alamein line by Rommel\'s depleted forces at the beginning of July had been repulsed by a well-organised defence. On the nightof 30 August Rommel attacked the British position at Alam Halfa, which was guarded by the 22nd Armoured Brigade. He was driven back and, in many senses, this marked the turning point in the Desert War.
