BIOGRAPHY:Robert McIntosh was born in 1838 in Canada, of Scottish parents. He went to Chicago, where hebecame acquainted with J.V. Farwell who, when he undertook his Hahns Peak venture,convinced McIntosh to accompany him to Colorado. McIntosh arrived at Hahns Peak in 1876,and worked as superintendent of the Farwell placer development. McIntosh also ran Farwell’ssaw mill, south of Farwell Mountain, and was one of Farwell’s most trusted lieutenants andassistants. In 1877, McIntosh became postmaster at Hahns Peak. He served a brief term ascounty judge and county commissioner but disliked political life. For a number of years heworked under lease the Poverty Bar placer mines at Hahns Peak. When the mines becameexhausted he moved to Slater on the Snake River, where he established a store and for manyyears raised horses on a large scale. His nicknames included “Old Mac” and “The canny Scot ofSnake River.” He was known to be a hospitable, kind man.
