Item 483688 ◊ ca. 1890 Chromolithograph Trade Card Featuring a Picture based on a Thomas Faed Painting,

Very rare and fascinating \"ca. 1890 Chromolithograph Trade Card Featuring a Picture based on a Thomas Faed Painting, and advertising Dr. Jayne\'s Quack Medicines.\"

The extraordinary Trade Card measures approx. 4-7/8 by 3-3/8\".  The front of this trade card depicts a young man, trying to entice a young maiden to go away with him and become his wife.   The picture is based on the famous painting by the Scottish painter, Thomas Faed, which was painted in 1869.  The painting is entitled, \"Too young to be married.\"  You can google it.

The picture has the typical dare colors of the era, but at that time the artists who designed the trade cards were \"really into\" using metallics.  So the sky in this picture is a silver metallic gray.

Although the Chromolithography on this wonderful Trade Card\"  is brilliantly done, the card itself is only in good condition. And this mainly because there is some surface damage on the front (see the white areas.)   despite that, the corners and edges are strong with little to no damage.  The back shows some browning due to age, plus some glue residue from being stored in a scrapbook.   (Please see the Photos above to confirm the condition of this card.)

This type of printed advertising was was typical of the day. The purpose of the brightly colored front of the card was to attract your attention. It didn\'t necessarily have anything to do with the product being advertised.  Before the advent of color ads in newspapers and magazines manufacturers and distributors relied on trade cards to sell their products.  They were often distributed nationwide. Even in those days trade cards were collectible, and would often end up in scrapbooks, which were also the rage. The trade cards and booklets which were printed by chromolithography, retain their brilliant colors to this day.

That back of this card advertises several Patent Medicines from Dr. Jayne.  Dr. Jayne’s was a large drug company located in the heart of Philadelphia.  As his business grew, eventually a10-story building the company constructed between 1848-1850 to house its expanding business. At the time, Dr. Jayne’s building was one of the most conspicuous buildings in Philadelphia. Unsurprisingly, it adorned much of his advertising.

However this card advertises Dr. Jayne\'s Expectorant for all forms of Lung, Throat and Bronchial Affectations.   It also mentions Dr. Jayne\'s Sanative Pills for  problems of the Liver (Jaundice , etc.)

Delightful and unique,  the \"ca. 1890 Chromolithograph Trade Card Featuring a Picture based on a Thomas Faed Painting, and advertising Dr. Jayne\'s Quack Medicines.\"  is a  wonderful example Chromolithography of the time, and would be a fantastic addition to any Victorian era collection!!!
