The Washington Society Invitation Sent To Abolitionist, Ohio Free Soiler:
$85.00

3 ¾ x 6 ¼ invitation to the Washington Society annual meeting at the Marlboro Hotel in Boston, February 15, 1823, addressed to abolitionist NATHANIEL SAWYIER, an 1805 graduate of Dartmouth who practiced law in Boston until 1813 when he relocated to Lexington, KY – then Frankfort, KY. The invitation was issued by THADDEUS PAGE, who was born in 1788 in Bedford, MA.

The Washington Society (of Boston) began in 1805 when some young Republicans decided to celebrate American independence with a commemorative oration designed to counterbalance the Fourth of July orations offered by Federalists “who merely used the name of liberty to deride its qualities and to excite jealousies and animosities between different sections of our happy land.”

NATHANIEL SAWYIER, was a the first president of the Ohio Free Soil Party, formed in 1848, to denounce the institution of slavery, demanding that the federal government “relieve itself of all responsibility for the existence and continuance of slavery” by abolishing slavery in all federal districts and territories. Sawyier was an 1805 graduate of Dartmouth, who practiced law in Boston until 1813 when he relocated to Lexington, Kentucky — then Frankfort, Kentucky — then Chillicothe, Ohio — and still laterCincinnati, Ohio. Nathaniel married Pamelia Anderson (1791-1888) in Frankfort in 1821 and together they had at least four children: Mary Ann Fitz Sawyier (1822-1912), DeWitt Clinton Sawyier (1825-1899), Sarah (Sallie) Frances Sawyier (1829-1889) and Nathaniel Isaac Sawyier (1832-1910).

Nathaniel confined his legal practice to land claims and took his fees in property, thus accumulating large tracts of land in Central Ohio, and in the Virginia Military District of Southern Ohio. He put much of this land to use in grazing sheep and amassed a flock of nearly ten thousand sheep at one time. Over time he traded his sheep for mules which were sold to settlers along with the land.

Nathaniel was a playmate of Daniel Webster’s and they attended school together.

Occasional light staining and toning with nice integral address leaf on verso and portion of Boston postmark near the edge.
