Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House
Wood and Nail Relic
Dr. Samuel A. Mudd was given St. Catherine, his home and plantation in Charles Co. Maryland, byhis father Thomas Mudd. It was on the occasion of his marriage and graduationfrom Baltimore Medical College around 1857. It was here on the morning of Apr.15, 1865 that Dr. Mudd assisted Abraham Lincoln assassin, John Wilkes Booth, bysetting his broken leg, facilitating his escape. Dr. Mudd was sentenced toprison for the part he played and was subsequently pardoned by Pres. AndrewJohnson in 1869. He died in 1883.
Dr. Mudd’s home remained in the family and in 1974was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It opened as a museumin 1983. This piece of lath wood and nail were removed during the restorationand was sold as a souvenir in the museum in the 1980s.
This original piece of lath measures about 4.25 x1.25 inches. The nail is attached with original old glue. The wood even showsan original nail hole in the middle. The writing on the piece of lath reads…..
“ORIGINAL LATH DR.SAMUEL MUDD’S HOME Ca. 1830”
The relic is in a 5 x 6 inch Riker Case for protection.A description with images is added to make an attractive display.
