I worked as a volunteer for an organization called "Athletes and Entertainers for Kids" in the 1980s and the 1990s. I was asked to work an event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel that involved a prominent politician and a young AIDS patient named Ryan White. That was all I was told at the time.
The politician turned out to be former President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. From what I understand this was the first time President Reagan met Ryan White. I was told that President Reagan was personally touched by the encounter and it helped to shape his feelings about the impact of AIDS on the American people.
The participants and volunteers were given the pictured blue/white Yo-Yo as a gift. I was so enthralled with the gift I carefully stored it in a velvet pouch and stored it safely for the past 31 years. I played with it a few times but, because I valued it so much, I rarely took it out of the pouch.
With the Yo-Yo I also kept copies of two press releases that were left behind after the event. Both press releases were marked "The White House Office of the Press Secretary." One is a press travel pool schedule and the other had to do with the American Farm Bureau. I'm not sure if these are significant but they do help establish the date of the event - January 8, 1990.
I have not seen one of these Yo-Yos for sale at any time between the time I received it until today. There are similar Yo-Yos with the Reagan Presidential Library logo but this is significantly different as it features the Seal of the President of the United States and an imprinted signature of Ronald Reagan. To be clear, it is NOT a live signature but rather an imprint of his signature.
This sale includes the Yo-Yo and the two press releases. If you have any questions or require more photos, please feel free to ask.
