His handwritten sentiment as New York City Police Commissioner, from the close of a letter
Autograph Sentiment signed: \"With pleasure & good/wishes/Yours Sincerely/Fitz John Porter/U. S. Army &/Commissioner of Police/New York City/June 15 \'87\", 3½x2½. Fitz John Porter was a West Point graduate who also taught there. He was wounded in the Mexican War and served on the frontier. A close friend and ally of Union General George McClellan, Porter served with distinction in the Peninsula Campaign, especially at Malvern Hill (July 1, 1982). When President Lincoln removed McClellan from command, Porter had a strained relationship with his successor, General John Pope. At the Second Battle of Bull Run (late August 1862), a disastrous Union defeat, Pope attempted to make Porter a scapegoat for the debacle, and Porter was subjected to a court martial. Pope was himself removed from command, transferred to the Western frontier. Since General McClellan, the Democratic Presidential candidate in 1864, leaped to Porter\'s defense, the military debate became embroiled in partisan politics. In January 1863, Porter was found guilty of disobeying a lawful order and of misbehavior in front of an enemy, and dismissed from the US Army. Porter spent the next 23 years trying to clear his name, and in 1886, by Act of Congress, his rank was restored and Porter was reinstated so he could honorably retire. A board of investigation also decided that Porter had shown better judgment by ignoring Pope\'s orders. After leaving military service Porter served New York City as Public Works Commissioner, Police Commissioner and Fire Commissioner. Fitz John Porter was the cousin of Admiral David Porter. Paper residue on verso (previous mounting). Otherwise, fine condition.
