Antique Wooden Civil War Canteen. Condition is \"Used\".
I purchased this at Bull Street sales in Savannah Georgia for the husband\'s collection. It has some real age. It was identified in the sale as a Civil War canteen. I have no other known provenance. There are markings on both sides, but unfortunately not discernable.
I had the canteen listed before, but pulled it on order to research it further. These types of canteens often pre-dated the Civil War and continued to be made after, but as all practical items of this time, were kept in use so long as they were helpful and functioning.
It was common in the Confederacy to use these canteens as supplies were often scarce. Because of it\'s bulky size, these wooden canteens were mostly used on wagons and by surgeons. See below for an exerpt from an article about similar canteens, I\'ve posted more info in my photos as well as images of similar types of canteens.
\"In my book “The Civil War Canteen – Third Edition,” I discuss these types of canteens. The large wood canteens weren’t practical for the individual soldier but worked out well for wagons and surgeons. Although they pre-date the Civil War, they were still around and out of desperation by the Confederacy, they were sought out and used.\"
Parts of the barrel are loose, but I will not touch it out of concern I might effect its value. All parts (as I purchased it) are there, and it is sturdy. I will let thr next owner determine if they want to clean or \"improve\".
Price is firm and fair considering the age and scarcity of this item.
