1800s Document / Mid-Century Frame Job

Written with a quill or nib pen, this original paper lists the recipe for \"Motifycation Pouder\" for horses. My conjecture is that the country veterinarian who penned this was using it as a sedative for horses to assist with behavior modification.

The ingredients listed are: \"gunpoder, alum, sulpher, crimatarter [cream of tartar], and saltpetr\" [sic]. To be administered \"A table spoonful at a time.\"

(Another member responded that \"motifycation\" might have been his misspelling of \"mortification\" -- i.e., necrosis or gangrene, and that sulphur and \"gunpoder\" were often used to treat the wound. So, perhaps the tablespoonful would be applied as a plaster.)

This item came up at an estate sale in Pennsylvania. I would judge that the person who penned it may have been of Pennsylvania Moravian (or related) descent, as I am familiar with this region\'s pronunciation of \"powder\" as \"poder.\"

- Dimensions: Frame is about 10\" x 6\", and the clipped paper is approx. 7\" x 3.5\".

- The frame is typical Mid-century wiid and black lacquer, and I would judge that it was framed somewhere in the 1950s or thereabout, judging by the age of the backing paper.

As shown in the photo, there is writing on the back -- at least the words \"Horse pouder for motification,\" which can be distinguished through photographic enhancement.

- Beautiful antique condition -- from a non-smoking environment.

- The frame shows light wear to the black lacquer in keeping with its age, and the backing paper is fragile.
