$195.76

Roman Nail Inchtuthil Hoard Genuine Archeology. Relic Very Rare.
OPEN TO OFFERS (realistic please)
The photos show the ACTUAL Nails for sale!
A very unusual find! One \"Pair\" and one \"Single\" Inchtuthil nails, Oiled and string wrapped in waxed paper.
The single \"Wrapped Nail\" has a large head!
The pair are wrapped \"side by side\" secured with string!
The other Nail is \"naked\" ie, unwrapped, and as found, by Prof Richmond!
I have NOT attempted to unwrap these nails. Sold exactly as shown.
Why, where, and when these examples were treated this way is unknown, presumably after unearthing this was to stabilise them and prevent further corrosion possibly during counting & sorting at Colville\'s?
The condition of these individuals is not known, but, being selected to be wrapped, possibly better preserved than others in the hoard? The Nails photographed are the Nails you will receive.
The wrapped up packages will be sent \"as shown\" in the photos.
Genuine Roman Nail, part of the \"Inchtuthill Hoard\" discovered by Professor I. A. Richmond in 1960. Buried under 12 feet of clay and soil the retreating Roman Army were, on orders from Rome, to dig an enormous pit to prevent the 7/8 tons of Iron left behind being used to make arrow heads and other weapons from the, then, very rare iron.
The nails come with a Laminated Cardbearing a brief history of their find. The vast majority of \"The Inchtuthil Hoard\" remain in Museums around the world.Much against Professor I. A. Richmond\'s wishes to control his find, some \"escaped\" into public ownership, and these are 4 of them!
Considering these are nearly 2000 years old, The Nails are not fragile if rather oily. Being hand made every one of the nails found was unique.Forloadsmore information try GOOGLING\"The Inchtuthil Hoard\"For Postage, the package will be enclosed in a stiff cardboard box.
Below is an extract from Wikipedia.Inchtuthil hoard[edit]

When it was excavated in the 1950s by Richmond, a large pit was found in the summer of 1960 containing 875,400 complete iron nails (Square shaft) ranging from 2-16 inches plus another 28 (round shaft nails) and weighing 7 tons (Inchtuthil Nailsby Roddy Fraser) and other iron objects, inc cartwheel rims weighing a combined total of ten tonnes. The pit was elaborately concealed, and the nails and ironwork were almost certainly buried by the troops to deny them to the local tribes when they dismantled the fortress before they finally left. Many of the nails were sent to museums as a gift and the rest of the hoard was sold to the public and other interested organisations with an offer of 5 shillings for an 8 to 10 inch nail and 25 shillings for a boxed set of 5 nails. Colville\'s (Iron and Steel refiners) who had been given the task of sorting and storing the nails state quite clearly that all the complete nails had been \"sorted gifted and sold\" within 3 years of their discovery, and no further sales would be available. ie. c.1963.[7]
