Vintage 1959 Universal Statuary Roman Woman With Grapes
Marked on the back with an impressed factory stamp: UNIVERSAL STATUARY CORP. c1959. Sculpture 28\" height and the base is 8\". She was manufactured in Chicago, IL.
She has the manufacturing stamp at the back in the grapes which makes it hard to read. See last picture. Also, a bit of bubbling on the shoulder pic but is not seen from afar. She has a smooth water resistant surface which I washed with water and soap. She is an Indoor piece since she has a gold pressed band around the base and felt on the bottom. I know the company did Chalkware and plaster but later branched out with resins.
\"This is a Universal Statuary Corp. figure that has been attributed to Gino Boni as the sculpture that made the casting and is one of his most famous pieces. He is one of the most notable of the artists.
This plaster/chalkware figure is a signed piece and dated 1959.
The piece is in excellent shape and the casting is very sharp.
Universal Statuary production was not large even for their times and counted on independent jobbers to resale their products right out of their trucks.\" Via Worthpoint.
\"1950s-1970s Universal began in a multi-story Chicago Ave. building where they made mostly plaster / chalk ware products. In the 1950s. They moved to a new second single story building located on Ogden Ave., where they began working with experimental composites. There they transitioned from chalkware to resins and came up with a material \"FiberClad InFrangible\", and guaranteed it would not break or chip.[2]The company employed plastic in the 1970s.[3]\" Via Wikipedia
