SUPERB 18TH CENTURY DUTCH ENGRAVED BRASS TOBACCOBOX – BIBLE STORY OF THE ISRAELITES CROSSING JORDAN & THE PROSTITUTE REHAB!
On offer is a Georgian era 18th Century Dutch c1750brass tobacco box with two wonderful engravings from the Bible.
The first tells the story of Rehab. Before the Israelites cross the Jordan, Joshua sends men toscout out the land. Arriving in Jericho, they decide to spend the night at thehouse of the prostitute Rahab. When Jericho’s ruler tries to apprehend them,Rahab hides them and then helps them escape through the window, thus savingtheir lives. In return, she and her household are spared the destruction ofJericho and become part of the people Israel. Using the window gives a positivespin to a biblical window motif that casts a negative light on other biblicalwomen. In saving the spies, Rahab she acts as head of her household. She alsofunctions as a prophetic voice anticipating Israel’s occupation of the land.Below the engraved story, is a Dutch inscription “rehad hides…?”
The second shows the Israelites preparing to cross the Jordanto the promised land with Dutch inscription “israëlgaat door des jordaan” (Israel crosses the Jordan?).
