A LITTLE TRIBAL BASKETRY INFO:
* Early Northern California Hupa, Yurok and Karuk Peoplelived near the Pacific Coast in the coastal mountains of between what is nowEureka and Crescent city* Womencollected native grasses as well as roots from redwood, juniper, digger pine,willow, cottonwood, red alder and spruce trees. Maidenhair and Woodwardia fernswere picked. All materials were used in the Hupa, Yurok and Karuk baskets that wererenowned for their distinct beauty and quality craftsmanship* Thesebaskets were an essential part of their culture, used for carrying food,collecting acorns and berries, and even as cradles for babies* Onlya handful of skilled basket weavers within the tribes still possess theknowledge and skills to create these masterpieces successfully* Two exquisite slanted bands of small scale fine and tightly woven horizontal stitches circle the basket without a pause* A narrow one-row band of blue and purplish-brown horizontal stitches provides a finishing touch
* The basket does lean to one side: purposely? or stretched over time? Who knows?
