Whiting\'s Sculptoscope -1920s Arcade 1cent coin-op Stereoscope Viewer
size 11 x 15\"
This is a Richard and William Whiting Sculptoscope patented around 1913-1920 and manufactured by the American Novelty Co. in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Sculptoscope was popular in arcades and on cigar store counter tops in the early 1900\'s. It is designed to view stereo lithographs and give the effect of 3-D to the viewer. ( 3-D was a new phenomenon in the early 1900\'s) For one cent, the viewer would be able to see 15 different stereo cards, then one would insert another coin to view the next set. This machine has 6 sets of these cards. It is made of heavy sheet metal and cast iron. It is operated by inserting a penny, holding the grip, then squeezing the finger grip. Each trigger pull flips another card to the front. The top opens up and you can see all of the cards in place.
