Vintage Walt Disney Treasures from Saturday's Toys presents...   a vintage set of five dinner silverware pieces from Tudor Plate by Oneida Community Silversmiths... celebrating Walt Disney's 1941 animated masterpiece, "Fantasia."

Includes dinner knife (with stainless blade), dessert spoon, table spoon, dinner fork and salad fork.  The "Fantasy" pattern from Oneida is known for its durable wear, including an extra layer of solid silver covering the most common areas of wear on the pattern.

Pattern was beautifully preserved within an estate collection; worthy of the finest Disneyana collectors.  (additional images provide for information only; not included with sale)

Circa March 1941: As promoted by Walt Disney Productions for their latest marketing effort during the exclusive engagement of “Fantasia” at the Carthay Circle Theater in Los Angeles.

Designed by Tudor Plate in honor of Walt Disney’s animated “masterpiece”, a new silverware pattern from Oneida Community Silversmiths was released. The pattern is often overlooked today as it did not carry a Disney trademark or copyright, but was considered to have been “inspired” by the film with the official support of Walt Disney Productions. Though not referenced on the pieces within the collection, the unique Disney tie-in was featured at that time in “The Saturday Evening Post” and several other newspapers and magazines.

The new floral pattern was named “Fantasy” (based on the film’s “Pastoral Symphony” segment by Beethoven; inspired by the flowers worn by the Centaurettes in those garden scenes). In support for the product launch, Disney’s marketing team announced that the silverware would be prominently exhibited in the window of downtown Los Angeles retailer Parmelee-Dohrmann Co.

Located at 7th and Olive, the Parmelee-Dorman building had been constructed in 1917 by one of LA’s earliest merchants, Coulter Dry Goods. The store’s founder, Rev. Benjamin Coulter (1832 – 1911) served as an influential Christian minister and was responsible for establishing several missions and churches for the rapidly growing city; also, serving as a leading merchant for the pioneer families and their descendants who had made Los Angeles their home. After Rev. Coulter’s death, the Coulter family continued to expand their business with construction of this new building at the corner of 7th and Olive.

Known in later years as “Coulter’s”, the store moved to its final home on the Miracle Mile (Wilshire Blvd) in 1938, and competing merchant Parmelee-Dohrmann proudly announced that Coulter’s former location would become their newest store in the downtown area.

While upscale merchants of years past have either closed or left the area, a few reminders are still with us to tell of the unique interests once shared between Walt Disney, “Fantasia” and the artisans of Tudor Plate and Oneida Community Silversmiths.
