Up for sale is a WWII Officer’s trunk/chest once owned by
CDR Howard Homer Skidmore, a WWII Dauntless and Avenger pilot. The Chest is in good
shape considering it’s age and come with its original pull out drawer and and
pair of WWII leather USN marked pilot/gunner gloves that are original to the
trunk/ Commander Skidmore. The trunk apparently was used by CDR Skidmore since
he was an Ensign. Also included is a extensive first hand account of Commader
Skidmore’s WWIi experiences as well and his postwar experiences that are part
of a book.
During WWII, Commander Skidmore took part in the attack and
sinking Japanese battleship IJN Musashi, escorted USS Iowa when President
Roosevelt was aboard, was injured when a Kamakzi crashed directly in front of
his aircraft and became close friends with Ernie Pyle during the war. He became
commanding officer of VF-11 in 1959. He was the Air Officer on the USS Lake Champlain
and was part of the recovery of the first U.S. Astronaut, CDR Alan B. Shepard.
He later was assigned to the director of Naval Intelligence at the Pentagon
during the Cuban Missile Crisis. CDR Skidmore retired in Rancho Palos Verdes,
CA. (his home where I acquired the trunk directly).
Many, many more details in his memoirs that will be included
with the trunk.
