WWI US Soldier, Killed In Action, Letters, Photo, Flag, West Haven Connecticut
In this lot are 4 original letters home from Joseph C. Donahue, Private, Co.D, 102nd infantry regiment, to his sister in West Haven Connecticut. These letters include his last letter home from “somewhere in france” dated July 15th, 1918. He was killed on July 23, 8 days later. Sadly his last letter states, “I am alive and well and in the best of spirits.”
Also in this lot the government notice sent to his next of kin regarding his death, a large format original photograph of him, the small 48 Star silk American flag that was placed by his grave when he was buried in France. Additionally there’s 2 booklets and a photograph of a West Haven war memorial bearing his name amongst their honored dead.
This is a beautiful and somber collection.
This WWI archive was part of a stunning private collection from a Maine collector, and each piece is in an archival plastic and the whole lot is bound in a spiral book.
