Offered item is a collectible, antique WorldWar I, U.S. Military brass field compass, original family ownership. Thecompass is in VERY GOOD ++, working condition. Compass is functional,the needle movement is accurate, smooth, and responsive. There are no dents, scratches,or other markings, either on the brass casing or glass face. Minimal, slighttarnishing on the inside of the case. The hinged case shuts solidly and openssmoothly with its release mechanism (see photos). This original, hunter-casedmodel features a classical star-shaped rose of the winds dial design. Compassdiameter is 1-13/16”. Although there is no marking, this compass is strongly believedto be a Taylor Brass Hunter compass, manufactured in Rochester, NY, between1915-1918. Always stored, kept in dry, non-smokinghomes. Please review the fifteen (15) photos toassist in your assessment of this item’s condition.


The Taylor Instrument Companies was a USmanufacturer located in Rochester, N.Y. Taylor and the British company Short& Mason built a joint venture called TYCOS (acronym of their names'initials). Taylor's success story began in 1851 when George Taylor and hispartner Kendall built thermometers in Rochester, selling them from their truck.The company's name was changed in 1872 into Taylor Bros., later incorporated in1890. Taylor opened a sales office in NYC a year later and acquired Short &Mason (London) in 1900.
