Stitch's Great Escape was a now-closed attraction located in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World Resort. The attraction opened in 2004 and closed in 2018, after running seasonally for several years.
The storyline of the attraction was based on the popular Disney animated movie, Lilo & Stitch. Guests were welcomed into a high-security research facility known as the Galactic Federation Prisoner Teleport Center. The center's goal was to teleport the galaxy's most dangerous criminals to the facility for imprisonment.
However, things went wrong when one of the most dangerous criminals, Experiment 626, also known as Stitch, escaped during his teleportation to the center. Guests were then recruited to help the center's staff capture Stitch and bring him back to his prison cell.
The attraction was designed as a multimedia experience, combining audio-animatronics, special effects, and 3D projection technology. Guests were seated in a circular theater with shoulder restraints, similar to a roller coaster, which kept them in place during the attraction's more intense moments.
Throughout the attraction, guests experienced a series of sensory experiences that were meant to simulate Stitch's presence in the theater. They could hear Stitch's voice, feel his breath on the back of their necks, and even smell his foul breath.
The attraction had several scenes, including a pre-show where guests learned about Experiment 626's backstory and a post-show where guests could interact with Stitch and take photos. The main attraction consisted of three acts: "Shrink," "Grow," and "Escape," which used a combination of physical and visual effects to simulate Stitch's presence in the theater.
Although the attraction was generally well-received by guests, it faced criticism for its intense moments and dark storyline. As a result, the attraction was frequently modified over the years, with some of the more intense moments removed or toned down.
In 2018, Disney announced that Stitch's Great Escape would be closing permanently and replaced by a new attraction. Since then, the attraction has been removed, and the space has been repurposed for other purposes.
