Evan\'s Plunge Bath was built by philanthropist Fred Evans in 1890 and is still in operation today. The largest mineral springs plunge bath in the United States, many tourists flocked to the springs during the late 19th and early 20th centuries for its healing qualities. William Richard Cross (1839-1907) , photographer of the Nebraska and South Dakota frontier, acquired a gallery from J. W. Pike in Hot Springs around 1888, and opened another studio on the Minnekahta Block in 1900. Cross was kept busy photographing the growing town, Native Americans living at the nearby Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and the spectacular scenery of the Black Hills..
