Men stand outside buildings on either side of the street. In the background is a lone church on hill. Some of the structures look to be constructed of Lakota sandstone which was obtained from quarries outside of town. William Richard Cross (1839-1907) was a photographer of the Nebraska and South Dakota frontier. He acquired a gallery in Hot Springs around 1888, photographing the growing town, Native Americans living at the nearby Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and the spectacular scenery of the Black Hills..
