Oxen teams such as this one could have hauled building materials and supplies for the railroad. William Richard Cross (1839-1907) , photographer of the Nebraska and South Dakota frontier, was based out of Hot Springs, South Dakota. Cross acquired a gallery in Hot Springs around 1888, photographing the growing town, Native Americans living at the nearby Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and the spectacular scenery of the Black Hills..
