Virginia Metalcrafters Colonial Williamsburg ELSLEY Cast Iron Fireback CW 101-1 For Sale

Vintage Virginia Metalcrafters, Colonial Williamsburg CW 101-1 cast iron Thomas Elsley reproduction fireback. The front has an embossed crest of the United Kingdom \"Charles Rex\" crest, depicting the Royal Coat of Arms crest flanked by a Lion & a Unicorn with the lower part of the crest having a ribbon motif. The back of the piece has printed \"T. Elsley\" for Thomas Elsley, whom designed and cast the original fireback for King Charles I circa 1660. Measures 23 3/4\"T, 21 3/4\"W, is 3/4\" thick at its thickest part, and is SUPER HEAVY weighing 55 lbs! It is in very good condition, and very clean, as shown in the photos! These cast iron firebacks had a dual use, as they were placed against the back wall of the fireplace to project the fire\'s heat forward into the room, while at the same time protecting the back of the fireplace / firebox from the fire\'s heat, preventing the quick deterioration and drying out of the bricks and mortar at the back of the firebox.
