Being offered is a vintage, Papago Indianhand woven basket wall plaque plate. The tribe is locatedin Arizona. This basket is crafted fromyucca, devil’s claw, and bear grass as the foundation, with a chord of willow around the edges. The basket has anage-related patina or discoloration to the straw. This is not unusual from exposure to lightover the decades. There is dust inplaces. The basket shows typical age andwearing. There is the appearance of soiling which is from dust and could use a washing.The basket plaque is approx. 8 1/4"wide.Insurance is included in the price of S & H.
The Tohono O’odham, as they are known today, or“Papago” people as they were called by the Spanish, live in the Sonoran desertcountry of southwest Arizona. Theancient name they called themselves was “Tohono Aw-aw-tam”, or the DesertPeople. Tohono O'odham means"Desert People". The federallyrecognized tribe is known as the Tohono O'odham Nation. The Tohono O'odham tribal government and mostof the people have rejected the historical name Papago, that was used byEuropeans after being adopted by Spanish conquistadores and later by Englishspeaking people.
