***Saved by a VP 71 PBY Catalina Black Cat pilot. He flew from Canton to Fiji on May 3
According to his flight book, he flew Fiji to Noumea on the May 6.
In a red footnote in flight log book, on May 10, 1942, he noted “First “71” plane to engage the enemy. Exchanged fire but no casualties. Plane returned battled scarred.”
