A set of beautiful amethyst purple Degenhart salt and pepper shakers. They are a beautiful color, especially in a sunny window, and are also UV reactive - a significant amount of manganese in the amethyst glass makes them glow green under 365nm UV light! These pieces stand 3” tall and are unmarked, indicating they were made at Degenhart prior to 1972.
Degenhart glass was started by John and Elizabeth Degenhart of Cambridge Ohio in 1947. John had been previously employed by the renowned Cambridge Glass company and like many other former employees launched his own glass business when they closed. The company produced primarily small figurines and tableware items in well over 145 different colors. Bernard and Zack Boyd worked at Degenhart and created many of these beautiful colors of glass. When Degenhart closed in 1978, the moulds, including the one for this salt and pepper, were sold to the Boyds, who then reopened the factory as Boyd’s Crystal Art Glass.
There are some scratches and wear on the lids - see photos for details. The glass itself is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks.
Please ask questions before offerding or buying, and check out my other sales - I will be listing more UV reactive glass, as well as items by Boyd, Fenton and Mosser, over the next couple of weeks and will gladly combine shipping on multiple items.
