VINTAGE 1930S J CHEIN 5 1/2\" WALKING WADDLING WIND UP COLORFUL LITHOGRAPH SANTA For Sale

The J. Chein Company began in a loft in New York City in 1903, with a metal-stamping operation run by Julius Chein. The company produced small tin prizes for the Cracker Jack boxes and other small toys for five and dime stores. Although the Chein Company made the advertising tins that we collect in its later years, its reputation is built on the nostalgic tin toys and tin banks that are so collectible.

This wonderful \'Walking Santa\' #76, circa 1930\'s, is lithographed tin with a key-wind mechanism. He is dressed in the traditional red Santa outfit with white trim and wide yellow belt and green shoes. The sack on his back is almost overflowing with toys and he is holding an additional gift with both hands. By winding the key it causes him to waddle and slowing walk. The mechanism works fine, but he refuses to walk (he sort of waddles at times but needs encouraging.). The lithograph is bright and in excellent vintage condition. The figure measures 5 1/2\" in height and is stamped on the back \"J. Chein & Co. - Made in U.S.A.\" Great toy.
