A Simplified Historical Overview OfKing Akhenaten
Ancient Egyptian Akhenaten, also spelled in Ancient Egyptian:Akhenatenand meaning effective of the Aten, was anancient Egyptian pharaoh. His rule was between1353-1336or1351-1334 BC. The tenth ruler of the eighteenth dynasty. Before the fifth year of his reign, he was known asAmenhotep IV Ancient Egyptian: meaningAmonsatisfied, and his name wasAmenophis IV. Aspharaoh,Akhenatenis famous for abandoning the traditional polytheism ofEgyptand introducing the Athenian, or cult centered around the Aten. Opinions ofEgyptologistsdiffer as to whether religious politics was purely monotheistic, or whether it was monistic, syncretistic, or religious. This culture moved away from traditional religion after his death.Akhenaten'smonuments were dismantled and hidden, his statues destroyed, and his name excluded from lists of rulers compiled by subsequentpharaohs. Traditional religious practice was gradually restored, particularly under his close successorTutankhamun, who changed his name fromTutankhamenearly in his reign. Decades later, rulers without clear succession rights from the Eighteenth Dynasty established a new dynasty, denigratingAkhenatenand his immediate successors and referring toAkhenatenas "the enemy" or "that criminal" in archival records.
