A Simplified Historical Overview OfGod Anubis AndCanopic jars

God AnubisinAncient Egyptianalso known asInpu,Inpw,Jnpw, orAnpuinAncient Egyptianis thegodof funerary rites, protector of graves, and guide to the underworld, inancient Egyptianreligion, usually depicted as a canine or a man with a canine head. Like manyancient Egyptian deities,Anubisassumed different roles in various contexts. Depicted as a protector of graves as early as the First Dynasty(3100–2890 BC),Anubiswas also an embalmer. By the Middle Kingdom (2055–1650 BC) he was replaced by Osiris in his role as lord of the underworld. One of his prominent roles was as agodwho ushered souls into the afterlife. He attended the weighing scale during the "Weighing of the Heart", in which it was determined whether a soul would be allowed to enter the realm of the dead.Anubisis one of the most frequently depicted and mentionedgodsin theEgyptianpantheon, however, no relevant myth involved him.Anubiswas depicted in black, a color that symbolized regeneration, life, the soil of the Nile River, and the discoloration of the corpse after embalming.Anubisis associated with his brotherWepwawet, anotherEgyptian godportrayed with a dog's head or in canine form, but with grey or white fur.
Canopic jars

Canopic jarsare vessels that were used by theancient Egyptiansduring themummificationprocess, to store and preserve the entrails of their owner for the afterlife. They were usually either carved fromlimestone, or made ofpottery. Theancient Egyptiansused thesejarsfrom the time of the Old Kingdom until the late or Ptolemaic period, at which time theviscerawere simply rolled up and placed with the body. Theviscerawere not kept in a singlecanopicjar: each jar was reserved for specific organs. The termCanopyreflects the erroneous association among early Egyptologists with the Greek myth ofCanopus- the captain of Menelaus' boat on his voyage to Troy - "who was buried atCanopusin the Delta where he was worshiped in the form of an urn." In alternative versions, the name derives from the site ofCanopus(present-day Abu Qir) In the western Nile Delta near Alexandria, where human-headedjarswere worshiped as an embodiment of thegod Osiris.Thecanopic jarsof the Old Kingdom were rarely inscribed and had a simple lid.In the Middle Kingdom, inscriptions became more common, and the lids were often in the shape of human heads By the Nineteenth Dynasty, each of the four lids depicted one ofthe foursons ofHorusas guardians of the organs. There are4 canopicvessels, each of which depicts one ofthe four sonsofHorus, as guardians of the organs inside the vessels.Thecanopicvessels take the form of the four sons ofHorus (Hapi).
