This vessel had a distinguished career. She was the second ship of the US Navy to be named for the tirante, and elongated silvery fish found in waters off Cuba. Her keel was laid down on 28 April 1944 by the Portsmouth Navy Yard, in Kittery, ME.Launchedon 9 August 1944 and commissionedon 6 November 1944 with Lieutenant CommanderGeorge L. Streetin command. Served in WWII. She was decommissioned and struck from the Naval Vessel Register on the same day. Then was sold to Union Minerals and Alloys of New York on Oct. 1st 1973 for scrap.
