Two Civil War Letters: Gen. Rosecans Fighting Sessionists At Gauley Bridge:
$225.00

JOSEPH H. CORBIN enlisted as a private on September 20, 1861, five months after the Civil War began. He mustered into G Co. Ohio 44th Infantry and was later transferred to the Ohio 8th Infantry. The regiment was active in the Battles Of Lewisburg and Cumberland Gap, Siege of Knoxville and Sanders’ Knoxville Road. Corbin was later promoted to corporal.

Corbin was mustered out on July 30, 1865, at Clarksburg, W.VA. During his enlistment, Corbin was promoted to corporal.

Offering two letters written by Corbin, a year apart, one describing the fighting at Gauley Bridge (W.VA.). The Battle at Gauley Bridge was minor but it helped the Union to secure its West Virginia position of dominance.

3 pp, 4 3/4 x 5, Camp Piatt, Nov. 10th, 1861, Joseph Corbin writes to his brother, in pencil, very light in a couple of places. Toning and a little chipping at top. “...[Gen] Rosecans has been fighting the secessionists up at Gauley Bridge for several days. We have got them surrounded so they have to fight or starve...It has not missed three days without rain...I expect we will winter at St. Louis...”

1 ¾ pp, 4 ¾ x 7 ¾, Lexington, Nov. 2nd, 1862. Written on stationary with a fine imprinted sketch of the U.S. Capitol in Washington. Toning. Very readable. Joseph writes to his brother.

“We are now in Lexington, KY., 84 miles from Cincinnati. Our recruits joined us here last Thursday. Our company got 22 recruits among them is Saml Cochran and Ian Eiserman. I didn’t know either one of them. They don’t look like they did when I last saw them. Sam and I was on guard together last night. I have not heard from home since we left encampment...Joseph H. Corbin”

The letter in pencil has a couple very light spots, with toning and light chipping at the top. The Lexington letter is written in dark ink and has a beautiful cartouche of the nation’s capital.
