The first known sighting of this cryptid was on November 12, 1966, in Clendenin, West Virginia. Five men were in a cemetery digging a grave, and claim to have seen a man-like creature flying low from the trees over their heads.

A short time later, on November 15, 1966, in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, two couples riding in a car near a WWII munitions dump, saw what they described as a “large flying man with ten-foot wings.” Following it in their car, they also noted that the grey creature’s eyes glowed red when picked up by the car’s headlights.

There were many other sightings over the next few days, including a contractor by the name of Newell Partridge, who said that when he aimed his flashlight at the creature, “ its eyes glowed like bicycle reflectors.” He blamed the creature for the recent static and buzzing noises coming from this TV, as well as the disappearance of his German Shepard.

The sheriff of Mason County said that the sightings were likely an unusually large Heron, which he termed a “shitepoke.” This particular crane was unrecognized at first because it was not native to this region.

On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge, located in Point Pleasant collapsed, causing the death of 46 people. The incident gave rise to the legend and connected to the previous Mothman sightings to the collapse of the bridge.
