Historic document with U.S. State Constitutions along with Declaration of Independence

dated 1796. New additions of New-Hampshire, Kentucky and Tennessee in this volume.

Along with several other signatures indicating past ownership,

This historic volume is signed by famous Quaker leader of the abolitionist and suffrage movements, James Mott.

It goes without saying that James Mott would have needed to keep this volume close at hand in his work as an abolitionist and suffrage activist.

(See Wikipedia excerpts below)

In 1833, he attended the founding meeting of the American Anti-Slavery Society in Philadelphia, and signed the convention\'s declaration. Later, he helped found the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society with Lucretia Mott his wife, who was a cousin of Benjamin Franklin.

James Mott was also chair of the first Women\'s Rights Convention, and was the only male ever to chair this historic function. His wife Lucretia was the key-note speaker.

Lucretia Mott, was said at her death to be the preeminent woman of the 19th Century.

She is featured on a U.S. stamp titled 100 Years of Progress of Women: along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Carrie Chapman Catt.

She is also commemorated by a statue in the U.S. Capitol along with

Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.

On April 20, 2016 Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew announced that several denominations of United States currency would be redesigned prior to 2020, the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. The newly designed $10 bill will include images which will pay homage to the women\'s suffrage movement and feature the images of Mott, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Alice Paul, and the 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession.

Condition: Looks about what you often see in a 221 year old book.

As found condition, needs some TLC but is a hugely historic piece worth the effort.

Leather over boards, with front board possibly not original and separating from book. Rear board is missing as well as about 10 pages from the back of book. Normal scuffs to leather. Looks to have sustained some light water damage at some point but excepting the back few pages is relatively clean. Interior has the requisite foxing, which is moderate but not generally text obscuring in anyway. Book measures approximately 7 inches by 4 inches.

James Mott (20 June 1788 – 26 January 1868) was a Quaker leader, teacher, and merchant as well as an anti-slavery activist.

Life and work

James was born in Cow Neck in North Hempstead on Long Island, to a Quaker family. He was the second of seven children and the first son born to Adam Mott (1762-1839) and his wife and distant cousin, Anne Mott (1768-1852). [1] James later taught for two years at the Nine Partners Boarding School in Millbrook, New York where his father was the superintendent.

James and Lucretia Mott

At Nine Partners, he also met his future wife Lucretia Coffin, a student and later a teacher\'s aide. He married Lucretia Coffin Mott on 10 April 1811 in Philadelphia. They had six children, five of whom lived to adulthood, four daughters and a son. James then began work as a partner in Lucretia\'s father\'s nail business in Philadelphia. In 1822, James became a textile merchant dealing in cotton. His Hicksite Quaker opposition to slavery, combined with increasing calls to end slavery by boycotting slave goods, influenced James to switch to dealing in wool, produced without the labor of slaves.

Like his wife, James was an active abolitionist, dedicated his life to abolition and the free produce movement. In 1833, he attended the founding meeting of the American Anti-Slavery Society in Philadelphia, and signed the convention\'s declaration. Later, he helped found the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society with Lucretia.

Mott\'s sister, Abigail Lydia Mott, and brother-in-law, Lindley Murray Moore were instrumental in founding the Rochester Anti-Slavery Society in 1838.

In 1841, he published Three Months in Great Britain, an account of the journey he took with Lucretia to attend the World\'s Anti-Slavery Convention in London in 1840. Though both he and his wife traveled as official delegates, the convention voted to exclude the female delegates from the United States. James Mott participated as an official delegate.[2]

James chaired the Seneca Falls Convention, the first women\'s rights convention, held in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848 on July 19 and 20 at which his wife was the main speaker. He and Lucretia signed the convention\'s Declaration of Sentiments.

His brother, Richard Mott, was elected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth and reelected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth Congresses (March 4, 1855 - March 3, 1859)

In 1864, James helped start Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. He died of pneumonia in 1868 while visiting his daughter in Brooklyn, New my other listings for more great items!
