The Story of Talavera Pottery from Puebla
Talavera's earliest roots can be traced to Chinese and Arabic Beginnings. This style of ceramic pottery became very popular
in Europe when Moors occupied Spain in the 9th through the 16th centuries. Early in the 16th century, the Spanish Queen sent her
skilled craftsmen across the Atlantic to the New World. They created Talavera Pottery in Puebla, Mexico, where the richest region of natural clay deposits is found. Over 450 years ago, Diego de Talavera, a Spanish
craftsman, arrived in Mexico with Hernan Cortez. Mr. Talavera taught the Indians this ceramic technique. Soon, the creativity of the Indians flowed, and Talavera became one of the main features of Mexican folk art.
