Toleware Tea Canister Lamp
Steel general store tea storage tin. Hand painted in red, black, white and gold enamels. Finely rendered coat of arms with stag supporters, knight's helmet, acanthus leaves and baroque scrollwork.
These containers were used in tea shops and general stores. Decoration could be plain or fancy, depicting a Chinoiserie or tea trade theme. The number represented the tea variety. Heraldic themes were popular, though most coats of arms were fanciful creations from the minds of the artists. Though beautifully hand painted, this example is not an antique. Age unknown, but likely 20th Century.
Converted into a lamp by the seller with new brass lamp fittings, rayon covered cord and quality, new black parchment shade. The finial is a refurbished vintage piece.
The container is 14 1/4 inches. Total height is 26 inches.
