Serial # 5945. This is a very scarce piece of World War II Artillery optical glass.
Purported to be for target acquisition, mounted within or in conjunction with additional eye wear, it is for the Sherman tank, 75mm equipped, and supposedly the T26E3 heavy tank, with 90mm guns.
The scope has its base and rates about excellent, retaining about 95-97% black enamel over the brass body. The decal which admonishes the user to handle carefully due to coated optics, is only partly legible. The white painted stamping with the model and government stock number on underside of objective remain sharp, as well as the serial number atop the objective.
The base numbers are C80004 and 5; there is some oxidation on the underside of the base, it is if no consequence.
Looking at the objective lens from the front, there appears to be some interior delamination, the rear lens seems ok. The stadia lines inside the reticle are able to be read, but the image seems cloudy due to the front lens delamination. The reticle has ranging or stadia lines left and right, they are very tiny and difficult to see (well, at least if you\'re over 50).
The small bulb screw compartment atop the unit still has the light bulb within.
An interesting and very scarcely-encountered piece of World War II optical ware.
