WITH A HAND FORGED IRON STRIKE-A-LIGHT MADE FROM A FILE ~ PLUS TINDER
This is a small 18th century strike-a-lite pocket box with contents. The small flat pocket octagonal shaped brass case with an Iron spring is typical for the late 1700\'s period. Being handmade, they came in variations of sizes, and also are found made of steel. This 8 sided box is 2 3/4\" wide x 2\" deep x 3/4\" tall. Weight with contents is 2.3 oz. or 66 grams. The bottom is curved with 8 side panels and an Iron rivet securing the front spring that has a small lip that would lock the top using the thin brass front downturned lip. The front has a brass button connected through a hole to the Iron that is frozen as the internal Iron spring is immobile and has not worked for perhaps a century. To open the box, the lid was raised and the thin brass sliver in the front that engaged the Iron lip has broken off. Regardless, the box closes and stays closed as the top is slightly domed with 8 panels formed at the borders; and the 8 bottom edges of the top have a tiny downturned edges that create a tight fit of the top edges to the top of the base.
The contents of the box include a flint stone, tinder; fibers / a piece of cord / a piece of cloth, and a fine Antique early hand forged Iron Strike-a-Light or Flint Striker. This is an early example of an Iron flint striking tool that was commonly carried by hunters, trappers, frontiersmen, outdoors men, travelers, campers, et al. These were used to start a campfire; perhaps on a gaming hunt to roast the day\'s kill, as well as for warmth and light. This is a good example of the small period Strike-a-Light / Flint Striker / Fire Starter used in North Eastern America that was prevalent at the time, and was made to carry in small tinder box with a flint stone and tinder, in a possibles bag, or in the pocket; usually attached to a leather thong. On the Frontier, nothing was ever discarded; and everything that could be recycled was used for a new & different purpose. Blacksmiths would take scraps of Iron, or sometimes old worn out flat files, buggy springs or wagon wheel rims, and reforge them into other useful objects. This piece was hand forged from a file. This has aged patina; the untouched condition that collectors love to see. 2 7/16\" long x 1 1/16\" tall x 3/16\" thick, and weighs .8 ounces or 24 grams. The Flint Striker was carried to start a fire by holding this tool in the hand with two fingers between the loops, and hitting the edge of the Iron striker against a piece of stone flint rock to produce a spark in some light fire tinder like dried leaves to create a ember that can be coaxed into a flame; and then into a blazing camp fire. This was a necessary tool, and the only way to start a fire before matches came into general use around the 1830\'s. These small pocket pieces date from the late 1700\'s up to the 1850 period or so; and was still a handy tool to have if matches became wet and unusable.
This would be perfect as a small paperweight / conversation piece, desk accessory or any Strike-a-Lite collection, Old West, Western Americana, hunting, Frontier, Trapper, Mountain Man, Hunter collector, Outdoors man, or Folk Art or Man cave DOES NOT DISPLAY THE CORRECT SHIPPING SHIP TO ALL COUNTRIES WORLD WIDE APPROVED BY PROHIBTS SHIPPING THAT ITEM U.S.A.
