SMALL, ELEGANT MARIANNE NAVASIE RED/BLACK ON WHITE HOPI POT:
$475

This is a beautiful little Hopi pot by a member of the famous and exceedingly talented Frogwoman family, Marianne Navasie Jim. Her hallmark signature is the family “Paqua” (frog) symbol with tadpole symbol beside it to the right (as shown here) an indication of her place within the family tree. The pot measures 4 inches in diameter and 3 inches in height. The pot has minor surface scratches and a minimal chip that measures 1/16th of an inch.

Marianne Navasie Jim is the granddaughter of world famous Paqua Naha, the first Frog Woman, and daughter of the renowned second Frog Woman, Joy Navasie. Though Paqua Naha died when Marianne was only three, she remembered her grandmother and her mother working the clay to create their extraordinary works of the potter’s art.

Born in 1951, she began making her pottery at 18 and continued the family tradition of red and black designs on whiteware, the unique style pioneered by her grandmother. Her own unique application of the traditional designs she paints on her pots comes from her left-handedness –- her designs move in the direction opposite from those of her mother. Marianne Navasie Jim died in 2007.
