1950 Singer 201K-3 Heavyweight Convertible Sewing Machine
The 201 is considered by many to be the finest domestic sewing machine
Singer ever built. It is said to be the toughest machine without going to
an industrial model. There are 5 models: 201-1 is the treadle with no motor
201-2 is the gear driven potted motor model.
201-3 with the belt driven motor and the 201-4 hand crank.
The aluminum model 201-23 (MK) was added in the \'50\'s
to address the weight issue. It is 10 pounds lighter with the
identical mechanics. They were all discontinued in 1961. This model, the 201-3 and -4 is the belt driven model that can be converted to a
hand crank. It could also be used as a treadle machine. It accepts low shank feet,
has drop feed dog ability and a rotary hook bobbin where in lies the beauty of the 201
stitch. It is an extremely quiet mechanism. The 201K-3 is the quietest machine
Singer made. The perfect accompaniment to the 222K featherweight, this heavyweigh will do all
the heavy lifting and at the same time shares the same attachments as the
featherweight. Between the 2 of them they cover all the bases. While the 222K
is easily portable the 201-3 weighing 30 pounds stays home. It will take up to a
size 20 needle and easily sews through a double layer of 4-5 oz. bridle leather.
Or, with a size 9 needle it can handle the most delicate fabric. Please see photos
of sewing samples. The machine is gorgeous. The top coat is thinning in a few spots but this only
adds integrity to the finish. The decals are all 100% and a bright, glittery gold.
It is fast, strong and produces an unbeatable stitch. A joy to drive. The hand wheel turns like it has power steering. The foot pedal has long, flexible, original wires and plug with no cracking or nicks.
The cotton storage pouch was sewn on this machine. I have been collecting, servicing and adoring this model of Singer for
years and have taken great care to insure that the machine is in
perfect running order. The tension, bobbin area, belt, oil and
lubrication have all been gone over. The motor brushes are like new.
The machine can be sent out with either the crank or the motor set up. Both are included.
