This is a good set of Keen Kutter saws sold by E.C.SimmonsHardware Company. They are a matching set - both models No. 88 which is the topof the line Keen Kutter model of quality. Simmons was a hardware jobber who hadtheir name and logo put on tools made by other manufacturers. Simmons used thefinest makers and these saws were made by Disston during the 1920’s, and is similarto their No.16 model saws in quality and style. It has the highest grade springsteel that is tapered ground with a skew back. It has carved applewood handleswith special nickel plated hardware. They are a set of CC & rip saws both18” saw plates with fine teeth and freshly hand sharpened. Both saws are in fine ready to use conditionwith freshly hand sharpened teeth groomed to perfection. These small saws areuseful as bench top saws in the shop or saws for smaller work. Of course theyare perfect for woodworkers with smaller frame bodies like young woodworkers.

The crosscut saw is a clean saw with a light readable etch and quote of quality. It is a fine toothed 11ppi crosscut andfreshly hand sharpened by me. A very fine tooth per inch for kiln dried cabinetgrade wood – having a thin kerf and smooth finish on cut. Sharpened with a 15degree rake and a 20 degree fleam it is a smooth straight cutter. The saw has agood strong thickness, with just above the tooth line of .032\" and .028\"up higher at the skew back; so it is well tapered ground to allow less set withthe teeth. I did fine tune the set so it cuts smoothly in dried softer woodswith a fast straight sawing motion as well as smooth cutting in harder woods. The front of the saw needed a little smithing to straighten but is now following a smooth straight kerf line. Thedark aged apple wood handle is fine with good horns and deep vine carvings Ithas vine carving on the handle and nickel plated hardware with the Keen Kuttermedallion. The handle is very comfortable and locks in your hand. It has a finebalanced hang and is comfortable when using.

The rip saw has 9ppi and is a clean saw with a lightreadable etch. The apple wood handle is in fine condition with a dark patinaand full length horns and no repairs. Ithas deeply carved full vines and nickel plated hardware as extra touches ofquality only found on the finest saws. The handle has early ergonomic stylingproviding a comfortable grip delivering a good balanced feel. I hand filed thissaw with a 4% rake which is a good rake angle allowing quick smooth sawingaction of the cut. Especially in harder woods or woodworkers who don’t usehandsaws every day this is a great compromise angle. The saw has a good strong thickness at the teeth of.032\" and .028\" up higher at the skew back so it has a goodtapered ground to allow less set with the teeth. I did fine tune the set so itcuts smoothly in kiln dried hardwoods yet a little more set so it also workssmoothly in softer woods.
