Based on the Japanese tokusatsu franchise Super Sentai, SABAN'S MIGHTY MORPHIN' POWER RANGERS debuted in 1993 on Fox, soon spawning one of the biggest entertainment brands -- with toys, animated shows, live-action films, comic books, costumes, clothing and more.
Hamilton Comics' comic book series launched with the same title just a year after the Fox series had kicked into high gear and just one year before the first MMPR live-action film debuted in 1995. With a long list of live-action TV sequels, comics series, and Hasbro-made action figures carrying on the legacy, a new Power Rangers movie was released in 2017 with a new generation of heroes for a new generation of viewers.
More recently, in 2023, heroes from several iterations of the Power Rangers came together in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: Once & Always, a one-hour Netflix special that incorporated the real-life death of the Yellow Ranger / actress Thuy Trang.
In the aftermath of the Netflix show, Hasbro announced that a new live-action Power Rangers series focused on young adults was in the works, with a script completed and pre-production ready to begin following the end of 2023's SAG strikes.
No updates have been made since, with some insiders speculating lack of any news might confirm reports that Rita Repulsa has been trying to derail the project from behind the scenes. If Rita's involved, the situation is already terribly dire. Then again, worrying is for amateurs. If you know the Power Rangers like I know the Power Rangers, they'll save the day in the end. They certainly will.
And they'll do so with flying colors. Go, Power Ranger, go!
