The scarab beetle is prominent throughout Egyptian mythology. The ancient Egyptians believed that baby scarab beetles spontaneously emerged from the burrow in which they were born. So they were worshiped as “Khepera” which means “He came out”. This creative aspect of the scarab was associated with the creator god Atum. The ray-like antenna on the beetle's head and its practice of rolling dung caused the beetle to also carry solar symbolism. The scarab beetle god Khepra is believed to push the setting sun across the sky in the same way a beetle pushes a dung ball. On many artifacts, the scarab is depicted pushing the sun along its path in the sky. In this papyrus from left to right: the hieroglyphic writing of King Tut, the cobra - a symbol of various things from early times, including: the sun, Lower Egypt, the king and a number of gods, including Maat and Ra.
